FAQ — Reverse Osmosis

Answers to the most frequently asked questions in this category.

Water wasted relative to filtration, mineral removal that requires a remineralizer at the end of the process, dependence on water pressure, the ongoing cost of filters, and tank filling time. In most homes the advantage in water quality outweighs these, but it's important to go into it with your eyes open.

The membrane does also remove calcium and magnesium. The solution is a remineralizer at the end of the process that restores them and balances the taste. Don't skip it.

Every liter of filtered water also produces brine that goes to the drain. Newer-generation systems significantly improve the ratio compared to previous generations.

A typical lifespan is two to three years — but only if the filters before it are replaced on time. A membrane working behind clogged filters wears out much faster.

In areas with low pressure the system works more slowly. In such cases a booster pump is added.

A Reverse Osmosis system is the most advanced technology available today for purifying and filtering drinking water. Water flows under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane with pores of about 0.0001 micron — so small that only water molecules pass through.

What the membrane blocks

  • Limescale and rust
  • Chlorine
  • Heavy metals — lead, mercury
  • Pesticides and chemicals
  • Bacteria and microorganisms

Why a remineralizer is needed after the membrane

  • Water coming out of osmosis is almost completely clean — and also low in minerals
  • The remineralization cartridge restores calcium and magnesium in a controlled dose
  • Balances the pH values
  • Restores the water's full taste

Storage tank or direct flow?

  • System with a tank — accumulates purified water between uses. The right choice in homes where water pressure is unstable.
  • Direct-flow system — saves space under the sink and provides water with no waiting, but requires proper mains pressure.

Maintenance

  • Pre-filtration — every six months
  • Membrane and remineralizer — once a year
  • The actual frequency depends on your home's water quality and the amount of water passing through the system
