FAQ — Filters

Answers to the most frequently asked questions in this category.

Sediment filter (PP) — every six months on average, and in areas with turbid water or old plumbing sometimes every four. Carbon filters (UDF and CTO) — also around six months. Osmosis membrane — two to three years. Mineralizer — once a year.

Four signs: a drop in flow, the return of a chlorine taste or smell, turbid water or particles in the glass, and unusual noise from the system.

A saturated filter doesn't just stop filtering — it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, and in some cases releases part of what it absorbed back into the water. It also puts a load on the system's other components and shortens their life. A filter set costs far less than a new membrane.

Self-replacement is possible: shut off the water, open the filter housings with a dedicated wrench, clean the housings, grease the rubber seals and reassemble with a pressure check. Most of the leaks I fix in homes come exactly from the seal stage.

A central filter is installed on the main water line near the water meter and filters all the water entering the home — including showers, washing machine and dishwasher. An under-sink filter treats only the drinking water at one faucet in the kitchen.

BEILIN H2O's whole-house filter category offers the solution to protect the home plumbing from sand, rust, coarse dirt and limescale — before they get into your home.

Where it's installed and what it does

  • Installed on the main line, usually near the water meter or at the apartment inlet
  • Treats all the water entering the home — not just drinking water
  • Protects the water heater, dishwasher, washing machine and faucets

Three types, three purposes

  • Mechanical filter — stops sand, rust and particles from the plumbing
  • Anti-limescale filter — stabilizes the minerals so they don't settle on heating elements
  • Carbon filter — reduces chlorine and odors throughout the home

What a whole-house filter doesn't do

  • It's not a substitute for an under-sink system
  • It doesn't remove heavy metals, nitrates or dissolved salts
  • It complements a drinking water system — it doesn't replace it

Maintenance

  • Replace or rinse according to the filter type
  • Usually every 6 to 12 months, depending on the water hardness in the area
