White stains on the faucet, a water heater that no longer heats like it used to, a washing machine that burns out earlier than expected — most of them have one source: limescale.
What limescale is and why there's so much of it here
Limescale is a deposit of minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, that occur naturally in water. The higher their concentration — what's known as hard water — the more deposit forms. In Israel, and especially in areas that rely on borehole water, the water is considered relatively hard. Heating speeds up the process, so limescale builds up first in the hot places: the water heater, kettle, washing machine and dishwasher.
What it actually costs you
- Electricity: a layer of limescale on a heating element insulates it, and the water heater works harder for the same result.
- Appliances: washing machines, dishwashers and kettles wear out sooner.
- Pipes and faucets: build-up that restricts flow, and deposits that get stuck in spouts and shower heads.
- Aesthetics: white stains on dishes, sinks and shower screens that are hard to remove.
The solutions, by level
Point-of-use scale filter
Installed at a specific point — for example before the water heater or washing machine. A targeted, cost-effective solution when the problem is concentrated in one place.
Water softener
It treats the water at the entry to the home and actually changes the water hardness at every point. It's the fundamental solution, and also the most significant over time. Water softeners are especially suitable for private houses and places where limescale is already causing repeated damage.
Drinking-water filtration
It's important to distinguish: under-sink filters and reverse osmosis systems improve drinking water, but don't solve limescale in the water heater or the washing machine. These are two separate problems that require two solutions.
What to do first
The first step is to know what's really going on in your water. A simple hardness test at home gives an accurate picture, and from there it's easy to decide whether a point-of-use solution is enough or whether it's worth going for a softener.
