A garbage disposal is one of the appliances that changes the kitchen experience the most, and also one that comes with the most questions. Let's clear things up.
Is it legal in Israel?
Yes. Installing a household garbage disposal is permitted, and the units are sold and installed completely legally. However, in apartment buildings it's worth making sure the shared pipes are in good condition — a disposal sends a different load into the pipes than they're used to, and in old buildings with problematic pipes this can highlight an existing problem.
What's required of the kitchen
- A power outlet under the sink — or the option of running a line to it.
- Space under the sink — the disposal takes up volume, and in kitchens with a narrow cabinet you need to check it fits before buying.
- A drain opening of a suitable diameter — most sinks in Israel are suitable, but not all.
How long does a garbage disposal installation take?
A standard installation takes about 40 minutes: removing the existing drain trap, connecting the disposal to the drain opening, connecting to power and a full leak check. We arrive with all the equipment, and at the end of the visit the kitchen is clean and ready to use.
What can lengthen the installation:
- A double sink — an additional drain connection and drain trap adjustment are needed.
- No power outlet under the sink — a line needs to be run or a socket installed.
- A countertop that needs drilling — when an air switch is installed on the countertop.
How much does garbage disposal installation cost?
Installation: ₪400. The price includes removing the existing drain trap, connecting the disposal to the drain and power, a leak check and a short briefing on use.
Drilling a hole in the countertop — free of charge when we do it ourselves: in quartz (Caesarstone), acrylic, laminate, stainless steel and wood surfaces. In natural stone (granite or marble) and porcelain/Dekton, drilling is done by the countertop company.
Possible extras, such as running a new power point or adapting unusual pipework, are told to you in advance before we start — no surprises at the end.
What can and can't go in
The disposal is designed for soft food scraps: vegetables, fruit, plate leftovers, peels. What doesn't go in: large bones, long fibers such as celery or corn husks, liquid fat in quantity (it solidifies in the pipes), and of course nothing that isn't food. Running cold water while grinding helps fats solidify and move on instead of sticking.
How to choose a model
Two main parameters: motor power and grinding chamber size. A small household will manage with a basic model; a large family that cooks a lot will benefit from higher power that doesn't jam. It's also worth paying attention to the noise level and the type of system — continuous feed or batch feed.
