FAQ — Water Softeners

Answers to the most frequently asked questions in this category.

It replaces the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium ions. The result is soft water that leaves no limescale in the water heater, dishwasher, washing machine and faucets.

A softener actually removes the hardness. A limescale preventer changes the way the deposit crystallizes so it doesn't stick, but the minerals remain in the water. Both are legitimate solutions for different problems.

On the main water line, usually near the water meter, so that all the water entering the home passes through it.

Yes. A classic softener works with dedicated salt and requires periodic refilling. The frequency depends on the water hardness and household consumption.

It adds sodium to the water. For drinking it's better to keep a separate line with dedicated filtration — a softener for the whole house and an under-sink system for drinking water is the common combination.

Professional water softeners based on ion-exchange technology, which neutralizes the calcium and magnesium responsible for limescale formation. The systems protect heating elements, coffee machines, the home's plumbing and expensive appliances, along with savings in energy and cleaning products — and soft water at every faucet.

Why it matters in Israel

  • Mains water in much of the country is very hard
  • Limescale shortens the life of the water heater, dishwasher and washing machine
  • It leaves stains on faucets and requires more soap for the same job

Softener versus anti-limescale filter

  • Softener — actually removes calcium and magnesium ions, and requires salt for regeneration
  • Anti-limescale filter — stabilizes the minerals so they don't settle. No salt and no electricity — a smaller, cheaper but less thorough solution

Where it's installed

  • On the main line, usually near the water meter or at the apartment inlet
  • Ion-exchange models require physical space for the salt tank
