A water bar gives convenience and immediacy — boiling water for tea without waiting for a kettle. An under-sink system gives deeper filtration and doesn't take up countertop space. If water quality is the main consideration — under-sink. If convenience — a water bar.
A water bar takes up room on or beside the countertop. That's the main consideration in small kitchens.
Yes, continuously — it keeps the water at a constant temperature. A basic osmosis system, by contrast, works on water pressure alone.
Good-level filtration — mainly chlorine, particles and odors. For deeper filtration, especially in hard-water areas, an RO system is better.
About every six months on average, like other systems. When the carbon becomes saturated it stops adsorbing and the water goes back to tasting like tap water.

A countertop water bar or an under-sink system?
- Countertop bar — comes ready, requires no drilling and can be moved. On the other hand — it takes up counter space and sometimes makes compressor noise.
- Under-sink system — hidden in the cabinet and dispensed through a faucet on the countertop. The kitchen stays clean, but it needs drilling, a power outlet and space in the cabinet.
Sparkling water
- Models with carbonation require a CO2 cylinder and a regulator
- It's worth finding out in advance where the cylinder will go and what refilling costs — it's an ongoing cost most people don't take into account
What to compare between models
- Cold water supply rate per hour versus household size
- Whether there's a safety lock for boiling water
- Which filtration setup comes with the model and what the filters cost per year
