Many people assume oil simply washes away and disappears. It doesn't — it stays in the pipes, and it's the number one cause of kitchen blockages in Israel.
What happens in the pipes
Hot oil pours out as a liquid and looks perfectly fine. But a few metres into the pipe it cools down, solidifies and sticks to the walls. From then on it behaves like glue: every food scrap passing by gets caught in the layer, and the inner diameter of the pipe keeps shrinking.
The process is slow, and that's exactly why it's surprising. Drainage gradually becomes slow — until one day the sink simply doesn't drain.
Why this is especially critical with a garbage disposal
This is a point we want to make clear: the disposal does not cause blockages — but it doesn't protect against oil either. It breaks food down into particles the size of grains of sand and the water washes them away. But if at the same time a layer of fat builds up on the pipe walls, those particles get stuck in it instead of moving on.
In short: oil clogs pipes even without a disposal. With a disposal it simply gets more material to work with.
What to do with used oil
- Wipe the pan before washing. One paper towel saves most of the fat that would have reached the pipes.
- Frying oil — into a bottle. Wait for it to cool, pour it into a closed plastic bottle and throw it in the bin.
- Solid fat — straight into the bin. Chicken fat, butter or roasting leftovers don't go into the sink.
And what about hot water and soap?
This is the most common belief, and it doesn't work. Hot water and soap do dissolve the fat — but only along the first section of pipe. A metre or two further on, when the water cools, the fat settles just the same — only deeper in the system, where it's harder to reach.
In an apartment building it's not just yours
The main line is shared by all residents. One resident's fat build-up can show up as a blockage at the neighbour below, and in older buildings with narrow pipes it happens faster.
And a final note: oil that reaches the sewage system continues on to the treatment plants. A plastic bottle in the bin is a solution that takes ten seconds.
