What is a reverse osmosis system?
Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most thorough filtration method for home drinking water. The water passes through a membrane with pores on the order of a thousandth of a micron, which lets water molecules through and stops almost everything else.
Quality systems remove up to 99.8% of contaminants: heavy metals such as lead, as well as nitrates, chloramines, PFAS and PFOS, microplastics, bacteria and viruses.
What's the difference between RO and a regular filter?
This is the most common question we get, and the answer is simple:
A regular filter improves taste and smell. It removes chlorine, rust and particles — but doesn't remove salts, heavy metals or nitrates.
RO purifies on a completely different level. If you want to stop buying bottled water — this is what you need.
A system with a tank or direct flow?
A system with a storage tank accumulates purified water between uses. The advantage: it works even at low water pressure. The disadvantage: it takes up space in the cabinet.
A Direct Flow system produces water in real time, with no tank. The advantage: the water is always fresh and the system is much slimmer. The CROSS 90 Balance, for example, is only 13.6 cm deep.
If your cabinet is crowded — direct flow. If the water pressure in your building is weak — a tank.
How much does an RO system cost?
- Standard 5-stage system — ₪1,600. A good entry-level solution.
- 6-stage systems with remineralization — ₪2,300–2,450.
- Aquaphor RO-101S — ₪1,890. 5-liter tank, suitable for low pressure.
- CROSS 90 Balance — ₪3,500. Direct flow, 90 liters per hour, smart faucet.
Add installation — ₪400 to the price, which includes shipping, full installation, a leak test and a walkthrough.
How often are filters replaced?
On most systems: pre-filters every 6–12 months, membrane every 18 months. An annual filter set costs between ₪220 for a standard system and ₪1,050 for a complete kit.
Smart systems like the CROSS have an LED indicator on the faucet: blue is OK, purple is nearing the end, red means replace now. No need to remember dates.
Frequently asked questions
Does RO also remove beneficial minerals from the water?
Yes, the membrane also removes calcium and magnesium. That's why quality systems have a remineralization cartridge in the last stage, which restores them in a controlled dose. A system without a remineralizer will give clean water but with a flat taste.
How much water does an RO system waste?
Old systems wasted up to four liters for every purified liter. Modern direct-flow systems reach a recovery rate of 50–60% — meaning much lower waste.
Is electricity needed?
Direct-flow systems require a power outlet under the sink. Systems with a tank usually don't. It's something we check before installation.
What happens if I move house?
The system can be removed and reinstalled. We'll uninstall it and install it in the new apartment.
How long does installation take?
About an hour to an hour and a half, including installing the faucet, connections, initial system flushing and guidance.
How do you choose the right one?
Three questions decide: how many people live in the home, how much space there is under the sink, and whether there's a power outlet.
