Garbage disposal installation — price, models and what you need to know

Garbage disposal installation — what do you need to know before ordering?

A garbage disposal is a device installed under the sink that grinds food scraps into small particles that are washed through the pipes. The result: a cleaner bin, with no smells and no flies in the kitchen.

In Israel, installation is completely legal in private houses and apartments. In apartment buildings it's recommended to make sure the shared pipes are in good condition before installation.

Who is it for?

  • Families with children — food scraps every day, a bin that fills up fast.
  • Small kitchens — no room for a large bin.
  • Apartments without a balcony — the trash stays inside until it's taken out.
  • Anyone suffering from flies — wet food in the bin is the main cause.

What should you check before installation?

Three things decide whether the installation goes smoothly:

  1. A power outlet under the sink. Most disposals require a regular socket. If there isn't one, an outlet has to be added, and that affects the price.
  2. Space in the cabinet. A disposal takes up height under the sink. For low cabinets a slim model, such as the WasteMaid 2090 Slim, is suitable.
  3. Drain diameter and sink type. A standard stainless-steel sink fits directly. Stone and granite sinks need a dedicated adapter.

How much does garbage disposal installation cost?

Our prices are transparent — no surprises at the end:

  • Delivery and installation — ₪400 (existing sink, existing power outlet).
  • Installation including a new drain trap — ₪450.
  • Adapter for stone sinks — ₪300 (as needed).

The disposals themselves range from ₪1,400 for a basic model to ₪3,400 for the InSinkErator 1000 with an extended warranty.

Which disposal suits you?

Up to 4 people — a 3/4 HP motor is enough. KitchenMaid 3/4 or Phantom, in the ₪1,400–1,600 range.

4–6 people — it's worth going for a 1 HP motor or more: Tornado 1.25 or WasteMaid 2090.

Heavy use or business — InSinkErator 750 or 1000, with a warranty of up to 7 years.

Not sure what suits you? Send us a photo of under your sink on WhatsApp — we'll check compatibility and come back with a recommendation and a price.

How does the installation work?

  1. Disconnecting the drain trap and removing the existing strainer.
  2. Installing the mounting assembly and sealing the sink opening.
  3. Connecting the disposal and the drain.
  4. Connecting the power and checking for leaks.
  5. A test run with water and instructions for use.

Installation time: about an hour. If the drain trap or an adapter needs replacing — up to an hour and a half.

Frequently asked questions

Does a garbage disposal clog the pipes?

No, when installed and used correctly. The disposal grinds food into particles smaller than sand and the water washes them away. Blockages almost always come from three things: fat poured into the sink, running it without flowing water, and old pipes that were already problematic before installation.

What shouldn't go into the disposal?

Fat and oil in quantity, large bones, long fibers such as celery peels and artichoke leaves, corn husks, rice and pasta in large quantities, and of course anything that isn't food.

How much electricity does the disposal use?

Very little. It runs for just a few seconds each time. The monthly consumption is negligible and amounts to a few agorot.

The disposal makes noise — is that normal?

A short grinding noise is normal. A sharp, prolonged metallic noise means a foreign object got in — a spoon, a cap or a bone. Switch off, remove it and switch on again.

The disposal isn't working — what should I do?

Most cases are an overload cut-out that can be reset by pressing a red button on the bottom of the unit. If it hums and doesn't turn — it's usually a burnt-out capacitor, and replacement costs ₪600.

Can it be installed in a rented apartment?

Yes, and usually without changing anything in the pipes. Most installations are reversible and you can take the unit with you when you move. It's worth letting the landlord know.

How long does a garbage disposal last?

A basic model — 5 to 8 years. Models with a 1 HP motor or more — 10 years and longer.
